Iran: Stop the Executions!
August 13, 2026: Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company, a member of the International Trade Union Network for Solidarity and Struggles: Today, as our country is being suffocated under the weight of crushing economic crises, rampant inflation, the collapse of the rial's value, military aggression by the US and Israel, the continuation of devastating war, economic sanctions, severe and widespread repression, and warmongering policies, the rulers once again answer the people’s demands for bread, work, justice, freedom, and human dignity with the most violent instrument of fear and intimidation: the gallows.
The Syndicate of Workers of the Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company, along with all independent labour organizations in Iran and around the world, is completely opposed to the death penalty and capital punishment under any pretext, for any charges, and without exception.
The death penalty is not an instrument for administering justice; rather, it is a structural and organized weapon designed to instill fear, paralyze social movements, and suppress independent grassroots organizations. Whether under the pretext of national security, charges such as "moharebeh" (enmity against God), or wartime conditions, the growing wave of executions in prisons is directly aimed at silencing the voices of an oppressed people who can no longer tolerate poverty and the denial of their rights.
We, workers, have learned that when the gallows are erected, it is the workers, political dissidents, marginalized communities, youth rising up against the status quo, defenders of human rights, and victims of poverty, misery, addiction, and economic and social insecurity who are sent to the rope. The ruling classes have always used execution to silence the protesting voices of oppressed peoples.
Internationally, workers’ organizations categorically oppose the death penalty and consider its implementation against political dissidents and ordinary citizens an instrument for the repression and intimidation of society. Furthermore, the International Labour Organization (ILO) has recognized that the right to life and physical security are essential for the realization of freedom of association and trade union rights.
We workers oppose the death penalty, not only because it is inhumane and must be abolished throughout the world, but also because no worker is free under the shadow of the threat of execution. When governments reserve for themselves the right to take human lives, the right to organize, to establish independent unions, and to strike and protest become meaningless.
We condemn all political executions and sham and expedited trials. The charges brought against political prisoners, social activists, women, students, teachers, youth, and protesting workers are manufactured scenarios that are pursued, particularly under wartime conditions, without even observing the legal procedures set out in existing laws. Every prisoner, whether political or ordinary, has fundamental rights that, unfortunately, are constantly violated in our country.
We call on trade unions, transport workers, global labour federations, and all independent workers’ organizations around the world to be our voice. Demand an immediate ceasefire and an end to the war, the immediate halt to all executions in Iran, the unconditional release of all imprisoned trade union and political activists, and the complete abolition of the death penalty.
The death penalty must be abolished immediately!
Political prisoners must be freed!
No to war, military intervention and aggression, and warmongering policies!
The way forward for workers and toiling people is unity and organization.
